On Victory (1945) Day after a sombre ceremony at Piskarevskoe  Cemetery, smartly dressed veterans fill Nevsky Prospect and Palace Square in commemoration of the Nazi surrender in 1945.  The national and international importance of this 9th May celebration is felt even more acutely in St Petrsburg, where it is also a day of celebration for the breaking of the Nazi blockade.
